No. 24 KENTUCKY FALLS TO No. 20 GEORGIA IN 200th GAME
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 24th ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (8-4-0/2-2-0 Southeastern Conference) played host to 20th ranked Georgia (8-2-1/3-0-0 SEC) on Friday, Oct. 12 in the program’s 200th game and the 100th at the UK Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs scored with 1:45 to go in the game to shutout the Wildcats, 1-0.
“Anytime you lose it hurts, but to lose a conference game in the final two minutes at your own place, it especially hurts,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “The field was wet and we had trouble keeping our footing and getting set, but what it comes down to is not capitalizing off of opportunities that were presented to us.”
The Wildcats had an early chance to penetrate the Georgia net when senior Annie Gage sent a corner kick in play at the 15:56 mark. Georgia goalie Ashley Lindley was forced to the right of the net and the ball deflected left, leaving junior forward Keri Boyce in front of the UGA goal but her shot sailed wide. The first half ended evenly as neither team scored on five shots apiece. UK had the advantage with three corner kicks to UGA’s two, while senior goalkeeper Beth Wells saved three shots on goal.
UK dominated the second half with 11 shots on UGA goalie Ashley Lindley, the SEC’s Player of the Week for Oct. 1-7, but three were saved by Lindley while the other flew wide or high. The Bulldogs finally edged passed the Wildcat defense at the 88:15 mark. Junior Beth Culver drove hard right and passed to senior Amy Berbary who dribbled and slipped the ball into the right of the net out of UK goalie Beth Wells’ reach.
Kentucky will complete the weekend slate by welcoming No. 19 Tennessee to the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Oct. 14 for a 3 p.m. SEC match.
