The University of Kentucky women’s golf team currently stands in fifth place after an impressive opening round at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Friday, Oct. 5. The tournament plays host to six of the nation’s top 20 teams and is being held at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Junior Rachel Lester and senior Towa Okiyama lead the way for the Lady Kats. Both were able to card an opening-round, 3-over par 75 to find themselves in a tie for 14th place. Junior Kelly Anders sits in 21st place after firing a 76, while Eva Gessner and Stacy Springer shot an 83 and 84 respectively to round out UK’s team score.
Duke leads the tournament after the first day with a team score of 293. The Lady Kats remain 16 strokes back of the Blue Devils with two rounds remaining. The second round will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, with action beginning at 9:30 p.m.
