No. 10 KENTUCKY SHUTOUT IN TRADITIONAL BANK TOURNAMENT
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 10 Kentucky Wildcats lost the final game of the Traditional Bank Invitational, falling to New Mexico 1-0 at the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 30. Starting the year with seven straight wins, the Wildcats have dropped two consecutive games to fall to 7-2-0 on the season, while New Mexico earned its first victory of the 2001 campaign to improve to 1-6-1.
“It was just an overall lack of determination to win,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “It was a total lack of effort – we were out of position, we didn’t finish, our execution and emotion, for some reason, were lost. There are no excuses, our athletes were not mentally prepared to come out and beat New Mexico today and it showed in their play.”
The Lobos were held shotless until senior goalkeeper Beth Wells misplayed a clearing kick and it deflected off of New Mexico junior midfielder Michelle Longmire in the 60th minute. The ball rolled past the UK defense and casually into the UK net for the games only score. Kentucky outshot New Mexico 19 to 4, led by junior forward Keri Boyce’s four shots on goal. Seniors Aimee Brown and Annie Gage were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the first game, Arizona State (6-2-0) defeated Furman (6-3-0) 3-1 to go 2-0 on the weekend and claim the invitational championship. Sophomore forward Patrice Feulner recorded two goals in the ASU win while sophomore forward Danielle Petro garnered her third goal of the weekend in Furman’s losing cause.
Kentucky, ranked 10th nationally this week by Soccerbuzz.com, will attempt to break its two-game skid at South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 5 and will complete its weekend slate at Florida on Sunday, Oct. 7. Complete game stories and box scores can be found at ukathletics.com following each game.
