ARIZONA STATE ENDS NO. 10 KENTUCKY’S WINNING STREAK
LEXINGTON, Ky. – It was a night of missed opportunities for the No. 10 Kentucky Wildcats (7-1-0) as they suffered their first loss of the 2001 season to Arizona State (5-2-0), 2-0, in front of 887 fans at the UK Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 28 in the Traditional Bank Invitational.
“We had so many chances to score and we just couldn’t capitalize on those chances,” UK coach Warren Lipka said. “So many times we were in position and we just couldn’t get it in. We actually stopped two goals ourselves as the ball went off one of our players right in front of the net and they were able to clear it. But give Arizona State credit, they played well defensively and they have a great keeper.”
Throughout the match, it looked as if the Cats were on their way to tying the game after surrendering ASU’s first goal by Stephanie Peel off a corner kick. Senior goalkeeper Beth Wells got a hand on it but the ball slipped past and into the Wildcat net at the 24:18 mark of the first half. UK came inches from evening up the score when junior midfielder Christal Mattingly launched a shot on goal above ASU goalie Kristin Slater, but the shot nipped the Sun Devil cross bar and was cleared by the Arizona State defense.
In the second half, the Wildcats took four corner kicks and several times the ball appeared to be floating in air waiting to be tapped into the Sun Devil net. UK outshot ASU 19 to 6, with 12 shots coming in the second period. Arizona State garnered an insurance goal at the 57:41 mark as sophomore Patrice Feulner knocked in her team-leading eighth goal of the season off an ASU corner kick from Peel.
Sophomore midfielder Jen Wilkinson led Kentucky with five shots on goal and Slater made numerous spectacular saves throughout the game, 11 total, to hand the Cats their first shutout in 15 games, losing a 1-0 decision at Georgia on Oct. 13, 2000.
UK, ranked as high as No. 10 this week by Soccerbuzz Magazine, will play host to New Mexico (0-6-1) on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. in the Traditional Bank Invitational. Arizona State will face Furman (6-2-0) in the first game at 11 a.m.
