No. 15 KENTUCKY REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH 2-0 SHUTOUT OF OHIO STATE

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s winning streak extended to seven games on Sunday afternoon as the 15th ranked Wildcats shutout Ohio State, 2-0, at the UK Soccer Complex.

Senior midfielder Susie Ledzianowski scored her fourth goal in as many games and senior Annie Gage dented the net for the first time this season as UK (7-0-0/1-0-0 Southeastern Conference) held its opponent scoreless for second straight game. Senior goalkeeper Beth Wells earned her 18th career shutout and fourth of the season.

“Ohio State (3-4-0/0-1-0 Big Ten) is a very good team and they had us chasing the ball in the first half,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “We made some defensive adjustments at the half and executed effectively from there – our defense and Beth (Wells) are playing as well as I’ve seen them play this year.”

The Wildcats lit the scoreboard first as Gage took a pass off an indirect kick from sophomore Amber Wilson and slipped it past OSU goalie Jen Heaney at the 4:02 mark of the first half. She also contributed on UK’s insurance goal by sending a shot on goal that bounced off the crossbar, allowing Ledzianowski to tap in her team-leading fifth goal at the 56:43 point.

Gage has amassed 27 career goals at Kentucky and needs only one to tie Carrie Staber (1995-98) on UK’s career goals scored list. All-SEC forward Kim Labelle sits atop the goals scored chart with 44 from 1994-97. The Westerville, Ohio (South) native also increased her lead as the UK career assists leader, recording her fourth on the season and 29th as a Wildcat.

“I don’t think about records,” Gage said. “The only thing I am concerned about is our next game. We might be undefeated but there’s still room for improvement out there. We just have to remain focused, keep working hard and dedicate ourselves to improving each time we take the field.”

Kentucky, currently ranked 15th nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Coaches Poll, will next play this Friday, Sept. 28 as it hosts the annual Traditional Bank Invitational Tournament at the UK Soccer Complex. Furman will play New Mexico in the first game at 5 p.m., while UK will face Arizona State in the second game with a 7:30 p.m. starting time.
