No. 15 KENTUCKY WOMEN’S SOCCER TO PLAY HOST TO OHIO STATE

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 15th ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will try to stay undefeated this season as it plays host to Ohio State (3-3-0/0-1-0 Big Ten) at the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. The Wildcats are off to their best start in the program’s 10-year history at 6-0-0 (1-0-0 Southeastern Conference).

“Ohio State is a very talented and aggressive team and they will pressure us the entire game,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “They’ve already knocked Connecticut out of the top 10 national rankings earlier this season so we know it will be a hard-fought battle – our athletes will surely be tested on Sunday.”

The Wildcats own a 2-0 series record over the Buckeyes, winning 3-2 in overtime at Ohio State on Sept. 27, 1994 and 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 4, 1995 at Kentucky. UK, currently ranked No. 15 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Coaches Poll, is led by seniors Susie Ledzianowski and Beth Wells. Ledzianowski leads the team in goals scored (four) and has dented the net in three straight games, including the game winner in a 3-0 shutout of Utah on Friday, Sept. 21. Wells has been solid in goal, only giving up three goals in six games while playing all 540 minutes in the UK net.

The Buckeyes have dropped three in a row since upsetting No. 9 Connecticut, 2-1 on Sept. 7 in Storrs, Conn., including a 1-0 decision on Friday, Sept. 21 to Minnesota. Ohio State is led in scoring by freshman forward Lisa Grubb, posting three goals and an assist for seven points.

“Many of our players are from Ohio so it adds a little more to this game,” Lipka said. “Most of the girls on both sides know each other from high school and their club teams so both sides will definitely be after the bragging rights.”
