The University of Kentucky women’s team began the 2001-02 season with an impressive performance at the University of Tennessee St. Mary’s Health Care Classic on Friday, Sept. 21. The Wildcats posted victories in eight of nine singles matches and seven of eight doubles contests.

Singles wins were notched by seniors Lauren Rookledge and Carolina Mayorga, the nation’s 27th-ranked player, juniors Leigh Bradwell, Amy Trefethen, Shannon Stafford and Sarah Witten, the nation’s 59th-ranked player, and freshmen Danielle Petrisko and Whitney Collins.

Two doubles victories came from each of UK’s winning tandems. The duos of Mayorga and Witten, ranked 10th in the nation, Rookledge and Bradwell, and Stafford and Petrisko all advanced to the finals of their respective flights and will battle for the flight championship.

Singles semifinal action will resume on Saturday, Sept. 22, along with the championship matches for each doubles flight. Action begins at 11 a.m. at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
