No. 15 KENTUCKY STAYS UNDEFEATED WITH WIN OVER MURRAY STATE
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 15th ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team improved its record to 5-0-0 (1-0-0 Southeastern Conference) by defeating Murray State (3-2-0/0-0-0 Ohio Valley Conference), 4-1, at the UK Soccer Complex on Monday, Sept. 17. Freshman phenom Kathy Fulk garnered two assists, making her the first Wildcat to reach 10 points for the season.
“It’s a win, Murray State came at us and played hard out there,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “You could tell in both teams that we’ve been out of action for a while. It’s always nice to get a win, but I’m just glad to be back playing and getting in the game mentality again as we have a tough road ahead of us.”
Three Wildcats scored their first goals of the season as UK outshot MSU 28-3. Senior Aimee Brown recorded her first goal of the year by opening the scoring at the 8:09 mark off an assist from senior Annie Gage. Senior Kate Qually took Brown’s lead and dented the Murray State net from an assist by Fulk at the 29:46 point of the first half. It was Qually’s first goal of the 2001 campaign and Fulk’s first career assist.
With the score 2-0 at the half, Kentucky lit the scoreboard first in the second period when senior midfielder Susie Ledzianowski netted her third goal of the season off a pass from sophomore defender Jen Wilkinson at the 60:55 mark. The Racers answered quickly as 37 seconds later, sophomore forward Brooke Lencki slipped passed the UK defense and garnered her first goal of the season at the 61:18 point of the second half. Wilkinson closed the scoring as she scored her first goal of the 2001 season at 67:02, getting help from Ledzianowski and Fulk. With her two assists against MSU, Fulk leads UK in scoring (4 goals, 2 assists, 10 points) and is averaging 2.00 points a game.
“I just take what my teammates create for me,” Fulk stated after the game. I’ve been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. We’re working hard, playing together as a team and improving each time we take the field.”
UK, currently ranked No. 15 nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Coaches Poll, will play host to Utah on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. and will conclude the weekend slate by welcoming Ohio State to the UK Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
