KENTUCKY SHUTOUTS WRIGHT STATE IN EXHIBITION MATCH

Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team shutout Wright State, 3-0, in an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the UK Soccer Complex.

“The first 45 minutes we struggled to get into our game,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “Wright State came out with good pressure, but we made the necessary adjustments at the half. I was very pleased with the effort and the work ethic the last 45 minutes of the game.”

After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats adjusted their offensive attack by switching to a three-player front. Freshman forward Kathy Fulk started the UK scoring by denting the net in the second half at the 48:50 mark. Playing in her first competition as a Wildcat, Fulk also assisted in UK’s second goal made by junior midfielder Keri Boyce at 64:32. Senior midfielder Susie Ledzianowski completed the scoring by taking a pass from Boyce at the 77:49 point. The Wildcats held the Raiders to only six shots on goal while putting up 21 of their own.

“We were playing with different lineups and formations in the first half and we were not able to get the ball up front on them,” Boyce said. “We adjusted and moved three people up front and that opened more scoring opportunities for us in the second half.”

Wright State, a member of the newly named Horizon League (formerly the Midwestern Collegiate Conference), is aiming for an unprecedented fourth straight conference championship in 2001 after earning bids to the NCAA Tournament in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

“We wanted to take this game and show our young players what it’s like to compete against a high-caliber team,” WSU Coach Scott Rodgers said. “We had a good first half but Kentucky came at us and wore us down in the second. They really showed their depth and dominance.”

Kentucky, currently ranked #25 nationally by Soccerbuzz.com, will officially begin the 2001 season next Friday, Aug. 31, as it plays host to Marshall at 7 p.m.
