Women's Golf

July 26, 2001

Kelly Anders, a junior on the University of Kentucky women’s golf team, captured the fifth annual Women’s Kentucky Open title on Wednesday, July 25, at the Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. She finished with a 1-over-par 74 in the final round to win the event by four strokes.

Anders got off to a slow start on the second day of play but captured the crown with a stretch of five birdies in nine holes. She shot a 75 in the opening round of action for a final total of 149.

The win gives Anders a little extra confidence as she travels to Andover, Kan., for the 101st U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, for which she qualified at a regional-qualifying tournament at the Cincinnati Country Club on July 10. Action is set to begin at the Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover on Monday, July 30, 2001.
