RICHMOND, Ky. — With 11 top three finishes, the University of Kentucky track and field squads gave a solid showing at the Eastern Kentucky University Track and Field Classic on Friday, April 20, at Tom Samuels Track on the EKU campus.The women were led by Falana Greenwell’s first-place finish in the triple jump. Her leap of 38-03.50 was more than two feet further than her nearest competitor. Also for the women’s team, five Cats tallied season-best times and marks including Marie Patton in the 800 meters (2:17.89 2nd), Liz Attig in the 1,500 meters (4:54.52 3rd), Janet Crawford in the high jump (5-08.00 2nd), Erin Greunke in the discus (136-08.00 4th) and Liz Kittredge in the pole vault (10-10.00 3rd). Not only was Kittredge’s height a season best, but it also marks the third time in as many meets this season that she has tallied a personal best, adding more than a foot to her best coming into the season.
On the men’s side, Matt Smothermon claimed first place in the high jump with a leap of 6-08.00, while Andrew VanderWagen claimed second with a height of 6-06.00. In the 800 meters, Kevin Panke notched a season best with a 1:56.1h to finish third, while Jonathan Feddock also ran his best time of the season, crossing the finish line in fourth in a time of 1:56.18. Bill Powers took second place in the discus throw with a distance of 158-02.00.
UK’s top competitors will see action on Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, when they meet tough competition at the Mt. SAC Relays hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
