University of Kentucky senior Edo Bawono, UK’s only representative in the 2001 NCAA Singles Championships, ended his stellar senior campaign on Thursday, May 24, when he fell to DePaul’s Jevgenij Cariov in the opening round of the tournament, 6-4, 6-2, in Athens, Ga.Bawono, ranked 23rd in the nation, had met 52nd-ranked Cariov earlier in the season, falling by the same score in a dual match on Feb. 3. Despite Bawono’s loss, the Cats pulled out a narrow, 4-3, win in that meeting. The loss closes Bawono’s career at UK, and the Cats’ No. 1 singles player ends the season with a 29-13 record.

“Edo faced a guy who he had played earlier the season,” Coach Dennis Emery said. “He had some opportunities early, going up a break twice, but couldn’t convert. After that, Cariov was able to gain confidence and close out the match.”

The Jakarta, Indonesia, native went on an unprecedented 12-0 run to start his senior campaign. His biggest win of the year came on April 20, when he defeated ninth-ranked Alex Hartman of Ole Miss in three sets. He entered the rankings for the first time this season on Jan. 29 at No. 100 and peaked in the most recent rankings at No. 23. Of his 29 wins this season, 21 came in straight sets with five coming over higher-ranked opponents. In his 13 losses, 12 came at the hands of ranked opponents.

Bawono finishes his career with an 89-49 (.645) record in singles action. The business major will complete his degree requirements in Dec. 2001.
