April 22, 2001 – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team finished 10th at the 2001 Southeastern Conference Championships in Gainesville, Fla., after shooting a 313 in Sunday’s final round.
Junior Towa Okiyama led the way for Kentucky, shooting a three-round total of 228 to tie for 26th place. Sophomore Kelly Anders landed in 38th place with a 233 total, while sophomore Rachel Lester’s 234 tied her for 41st. Freshman Eva Gessner tossed in a 245 for the weekend to end up in 52nd place, while senior Jenny Throgmorton closed out her SEC career by shooting a 253 for 58th place.
Georgia claimed the tournament title with an eight-over-par 872 for the weekend. South Carolina’s Kristy McPherson was the top individual in the event, shooting a nine-under-par 207 in the three-day tourney. LSU’s Katy Harris, who shot a tournament record-low 65 in Saturday’s second round, finished in second place with a 210.
The Lady Kats return to action May 10-12 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the NCAA Regional Championships. The tournament, which will be played on the Finley Golf Course, is a qualifier for the NCAA Championships that will be played May 22-25, in Deland, Fla.
