Carolina Mayorga, a junior on the University of Kentucky womens tennis team, was named Southeastern Conference Player ofthe Week the league office announced on Wednesday.
Mayorga has competed in the No. 1 singles position all season for the Wildcats and is currently the 45th-ranked player inthe nation. In doubles, Mayorga teams with sophomore Sarah Witten to form the countrys 29th-ranked pair.
Last week, Mayorga went 6-0 in dual match play. She defeated three-time All-American Kristy Dascoliin three sets to clinch a 4-3 UK win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on April 11.In the Cats regular seasonfinale against fourth-ranked Tennessee, Mayorga defeated 38th-ranked Alison Ojeda in singles and 24th-rankedOjeda and Crystal Cleveland in doubles.
This is a tremendous honor for both Carolina and the program, Coach Mark Guilbeau said. It is extraspecial because of the perseverance she has shown to have the success she has had of late. She is trulydeserving of this honor.
The Bogota, Columbia, native has played the top spot for UK each of the last two years. She and therest of the Wildcats are gearing up to compete in the Southeastern Conference Tournament this weekend,April 19-22. The Cats will battle Arkansas in the opening round on Thursday.
