GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Apr. 6, 2001) — Kevin Estrada’s 10th inning single plated Matt Siegel and gave the Florida Gators a 7-6 extra innings win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday, April 6, at McKethan Stadium.

Despite Kentucky’s best comeback effort, battling back from being down six runs, the Gators extended their winning steak to 12-games, the longest in the tenure of head coach Andy Lopez. With the loss, the Cats fell to 14-18, 3-10 in the Southeastern Conference. UF improved to 23-13, 7-6 in the SEC.

Trailing 6-0 after four innings, UK got on the board with a single run in the fifth. A Cabeb Brock single plated Gordy Tyler and swung the momentum in the Cats favor.

Kentucky loaded the bases on a single by Beau Moore in the 6th inning and back-to-back walks to Vince Harrison and Spencer Preston. With two outs, Tyler drove in his 18th run of the year on an infield single off Joey Simon. The bases stayed loaded for Brock who unloaded on Simon’s first offering over the wall in left for a grand slam, his 2nd home run of they year to tie the game at six.

Cory Hahn had has best relief outing of the season going 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Cats. The freshman out of Male High School struck out Siegel looking to end the 7th inning and his teammates swarmed him as he came to the dugout.

UK loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th inning, but Keith Ramsey struck out Moore swinging for the first out of the inning. Then disaster struck for the Cats. Spencer Graeter’s failed attempt at the bunt portion of a UK squeeze play made Seth Morris a sitting duck between third base and home, and Florida doubled-up Brad Pickrell between first and second for the final out of the inning.

Jon Hooker struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th inning, with all three Gator batters failing to put a bat on the ball.

Kentucky failed to score in its half of the 10th.

In the bottom of the 10th, Siegel reached on a two base error with one out. After an intentional walk to Aaron Sobierai, Estrada’s single to right field plated Siegel for the winning run.

UK will look to even the series when the two team meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Scott Wade (2-5, 2.89 ERA) will be on the hill for the Wildcats.
