CINCINNATI – Powered by a season-high 22 hits, the University of Kentuckybaseball team ended its four game losing streak with a 13-4 win over XavierUniversity on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Field in Cincinnati.
Twelve Wildcats recorded hits, including Caleb Brock, Gordon Tyler andMorgan Embry who tallied three hits apiece. UK (12-15) scored in sixinnings, breaking the game open with five runs in the seventh frame.
Making his first start of the season, Bryan Felkel, UK’s lone southpawpitcher, picked up his first win by going four innings, allowing only threehits and no runs while striking out two.
The Cats wasted little time jumping on the Musketeers, plating two runs inboth the first and second innings, and adding one more in the third.
UK pushed another run across in the fifth before XU got on the scoreboardwith three runs in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Cats’ lead inhalf.
Leading 6-3, UK blew the game open in the seventh inning with five runs.Spencer Preston led off with his fifth home run of the season. Gordon Tylerand Morgan Embry followed with singles. Seth Morris’ sacrifice fly platedTyler then Austin Madison drove home the fourth UK run of the inning. TheWildcats final run of the inning came when Brad Pickrell drove home SpencerGraeter with another sac fly, stretching the UK lead to eight runs at 11-3.
The Cats would tack-on two additional runs in the eighth and XU wouldmanufacture a run in the ninth to make the final tally 13-4.
With the loss, XU fell to 7-19. Greg Wiggers was saddled with the loss forthe Musketeers. Wiggers was shelled with 15 hits and eight runs over sixfull innings in falling to 2-4.
Pickrell drove in three runs to lead the Cats. Beau Moore, Preston andMadison recorded two RBI apiece.
The Cats travel to Baton Rouge for a weekend series with the defending NCAAChampion LSU Tigers starting Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.CST.
