The 25th-ranked University of Kentucky womens tennis team scored anothergiant win on Sunday, March 25, when it defeated 24th-ranked SoutheasternConference rival LSU (10-6, 2-4 SEC) by a count of 6-1 at the Hilary J.Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus.
The Wildcats (10-6, 4-3 SEC) grabbed a 1-0 lead after taking two of threedoubles matches. Senior Brooke Skeen and junior Lauren Rookledgeeased to an 8-0 win over LSUs Fernanda Tsucamoto and Amy McIlhaneyto notch UKs first win. Junior Carolina Mayorga and sophomore SarahWitten battled out a tough 9-7 victory over the nations 20th-ranked duo ofBruna Colosio and Rocio Fantilli to give the Cats the matchs first point.
In singles action, Skeen rolled Lauren Haddix by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to giveUK the 2-0 edge. Sophomores Leigh Bradwell, Amy Trefethen and Wittenlater added straight-set wins to clinch the victory for the Wildcats.
Rookledge continued her strong play with a three-set win over Tsucamototo close the match out and chalk up the 6-1 UK victory. We are really focusing on the progress we are making, Coach MarkGuilbeau said. We are making great strides. This is the best team we havebeaten all year. We played well today because we played with intensitywithout becoming tense. The emotions that are coming from this team arepositive and that is going to take us further than anything else.
The Cats will hit the courts again on Friday, March 30, when they travel toAthens, Ga., to take on the defending National Champion Georgia Bulldogs.
The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
