Smith and Willard servedtogether on Rick Pitinos first Wildcat staff (1989-90), and after one year as associate coach, Willard moved on as head coach atWestern Kentucky while Smith was promoted to associate coach at UK. The two faced each other as head coaches in the 1998Puerto Rico Shootout with Willards Pittsburgh Panthers stunning Smiths Wildcats, 69-56, in the second round.
UK is 10-7 this season against teams in this years tournament field. The only two teams to defeat the Wildcats and not makethe field of 65 are St. Johns and Alabama.
