(Mar. 10) — The University of Kentucky womens tennis team made good on its bid to upset the 22nd-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, March 10, at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. UK (8-4, 3-3 SEC) downed the Hogs (5-5) by ascore of 4-1.
The Cats came out in impressive fashion, capturing all three matches to claim the doubles point. JuniorCarolina Mayorga and sophomore Sarah Witten rolled 40th-ranked Chin Bee Khoo and Brenda Vlasak 8-1 toclinch the Cats first point of the match.
In singles action it was much of the same as the Wildcats took three quick, straight-set matches to clinch theupset win over Arkansas. Witten, along with senior Brooke Skeen and sophomore Leigh Bradwell all scoredvictories in singles competition.
The Razorbacks lone point came courtesy of Chin Bee Khoo. Khoo, a two-time All-American, defeatedMayorga on Court 1 in a hard-fought contest. Mayorga fought back after losing the opening set to win thesecond and force the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker Khoo triumphed 12-10.
“I am so extremely impressed with every member of this team,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “I am especiallypleased with the strength of our doubles play. Our execution was great today. I am also happy for the playersto get to experience such a big win.”
The Wildcats now hit the road on a two-game swing that will take them through the Sunshine State. The squadwill battle South Florida on Tuesday, March 13, before heading to Florida International on Thursday, March15.
