The University of Kentucky womens tennis team scored its second 6-1 victory in as manydays, when they downed the Indiana Hoosiers (7-4) on Sunday, March 4, in the Hilary J. BooneIndoor Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (7-5, 2-3 SEC) opened the day by taking two out of three doubles contests toclaim the doubles point. The 23rd-ranked pair of senior Brooke Skeen and juniorLauren Rookledge took over at the No. 1 doubles spot for UK to breeze to an 8-2win over Indianas Kelly Blanch and Martina Grimm.
UK continued its stellar play in singles competition as it won five matches toknock out the Hoosiers and notch the victory. Skeen and junior Carolina Mayorgaworked quickly as they bested their opponents in straight sets. Rookledge andsophomore Leigh Bradwell picked up singles victories as well, to extend theirwinning streaks to five. Sophomore Sarah Witten also came out with a win afterbattling back from an opening-set loss to defeat Linda Tran 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Cats kept their home winning streak intact, extending the run to six matchesat the Boone Tennis Center without a loss this season.I am impressed with the way this team played focused today after the win overAlabama yesterday, Assistant Coach Kathy Herring said. They came out andplayed to win and that is exactly what they did.
The squad will return to the courts on Saturday, March 10, when the 24th-rankedArkansas Razorbacks come to Lexington. Action will begin at noon at the BooneTennis Complex on the UK campus. Admission is free.
