TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams opened up the 2001 Southeastern Conference Championship meet with strong performances in the men’s one-meter diving, women’s three-meter diving, 200 medley relay, and 800 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Clayton Moss took the SEC title in one-meter diving, upsetting defending three-time champion Jud Campbell of Georgia. Krntucky’s last diving title came in 1998 and Moss is only the third man in Wildcat history to win an SEC event. Carrie Knoeber made it to the finals for the women in three-meter diving, placing sixth.

The men’s 200 medley relay team, consisting of Fernando Barros, Roger Watkins, Shaun Zitani, and Aaron Workman shattered the UK school record and provisionally qualified for NCAAs. The first relay of the night was the 200 medley relay. The women’s team just missed the NCAA “B” cut and the school record by a half a second as it finished sixth.

Next up was the 800 medley relay in which the men once again shattered the school record by over five seconds. The relay, which was made up of Macon White, Eddie Clement, Aaron Workman, and David Tweedie, also provisionally qualified the relay team for NCAAs. White, swimming the leadoff for the relay, broke his own school record in the 200 freestyle and automatically qualified for NCAAs with a time of 1:36.04. The team finished fifth in the event.

The women’s 800 relay again just missed the school record but provisionally qualified for NCAAs, placing fifth.

Tomorrow’s events include the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, and women’s one-meter diving, as well as the 200 freestyle relay.
