The University of Kentucky womens tennis team notched another victory on Friday, Feb. 9, asthey shutout the Michigan Wolverines 7-0 to up their record to 3-2 on the season and hand Michigan(3-1) its first loss of the year.
The Wildcats, who have yet to lose a home match at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, did notdrop a set on the day. The match marked the third shutout for UK, which also held Louisville andCincinnati scoreless.
Junior Carolina Mayorga turned in an impressive showing to defeat the nations 58th-rankedplayer, Chrissie Nolan, 6-1, 6-3. Wildcat senior Brooke Skeen also had anextraordinary day with her 6-0, 6-0 win in singles competition and an 8-0 victory indoubles action with partner Lauren Rookledge.
As a team we had a strong desire to win today, Coach Mark Guilbeau said.We have had some bumps in the road the past few matches, but I think we willgrow from those losses. Some of these girls are really working hard to keep this teamon the right track mentally, and as a coach, it is greatly appreciated.
The Cats will now travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face SEC foe Florida on Sunday,Feb. 11. It will be a homecoming for sophomore Shannon Stafford, who hails fromGainesville.
