The University of Kentucky rifle team knocked off Jacksonville State on Saturday, Jan. 20, 6193-6048, as fourteam shooters shot above a 390 in air rifle to set a new school record with a 1564 team total. Also notching a 390 inindividual air rifle competition was freshman Lindsey Meagher, giving the Cats the top five places in the competition.
Leading the way for Kentucky once again was freshman Bradley Wheeldon, who claimed overall honors with histotal of 1558. Wheeldon also finished first in both individual competitions with a 393 in air rifle and an 1165 insmallbore.
UK’s impressive showing in air rifle marks the first time in school history that five shooters have hit the 390 markin a single competition. Following Wheeldon was senior Taryn Lewis with a 391, while freshman James Nash,sophomore Crystal Hamilton and Meagher each notched a 390 in the event.
“Our air rifle scores were above average for us and really helped to put us over the top, ” Coach Harry Mullinssaid. “I was impressed with the team on a lot of levels today, but we have a little work to do in smallbore before wewill see the results that I know we are capable of.”
The team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when it travels to Murray, Ky., to compete in the WithrowInvitational.
