University of Kentucky men’s tennis sophomore Todd Scheck finished fourth at the UK Winterslam 2001 on Sunday, Jan. 21, atthe Boone Indoor Tennis Center on UK’s campus.
Scheck, who won his first two matches on Saturday with energetic and emotional play, struggled in his semifinal with Ohio State’sVince Ng, dropping the match 6-3, 6-1. Scheck faced Ohio State’s Brenton Contini in the consolation matchup and dropped thepro-set, 8-3.
Also seeing action Sunday for Kentucky was freshman Karim Benmansour, who dropped his first match with OSU’s Ben Kirksey,6-3, 6-3, before defaulting his consolation match with DePaul’s Sanjay Jeram due to injury.
“Unfortunately, our guys were physically spent going into today’s matches,” Associate Head Coach Ford Lankford said. “It’stough to play this many matches in such a short amount of time, but I really feel that this atmosphere will help to prepare our new guysfor the tough talent they’ll face in the coming months.”
The Cats return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to face William & Mary at 9 a.m., and EastTennessee State at 4:30 p.m. Kentucky’s home schedule gets underway on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, when the Tennis Cats host OhioState at 5 p.m. at the Boone Indoor Tennis Center.
