The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team will face intrastate rival Louisville on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall in the 36th meeting between the schools.

The Cats (2-4) hope to snap a two-game losing streak after falling to No. 19 Xavier and No. 5 Purdue last week. The Cardinals (1-5) also hope to get back on track after a sluggish start. U of L lost five straight games on the road before picking up a win last Saturday at home versus Illinois State.

The UK/U of L series is the second longest series in UK women’s basketball 26-year history. Kentucky leads the all-time series 26-9, including two straight. The Cats took a 75-65 win over the Cardinals last season in Lexington in the annual Battle of the Bluegrass. LaTonya McDole and Shantia Owens led four Wildcats in double-figures with 18 points. McDole also charted a career-tying 14 rebounds.

In addition, the Cats lead the series in Louisville 9-7 but are 1-2 versus the Cards in Freedom Hall in the Mattox era.

“Playing on the road is always tough,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “We are going to have to come ready to play. We have three more games on the road after this and we need to work on being more consistent. This will be another tough battle for us.”

What is tougher for the Cats is the fact they may be without the help of leading scorer SeSe Helm. The 6-4 rookie center, who averages a team-high 13.3 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game, injured her right knee in the middle of the second half on Wednesday versus Xavier. She missed the remainder of the half and did not practice with the Cats today. Helm is listed as questionable for Saturday’s match up with Louisville.

The Cats will travel next to Miami, Fla., where they will participate in the Baptist Health Systems Women’s Fab Four Classic. UK will meet host-team Florida International on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. ET and will face Miami in a regular season game on Tuesday,Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
