Football News Honors Derek Smith: Sophomore tight end Derek Smith has been picked first-team All-Southeastern Conferenceand honorable mention All-America by Football News magazine.
Smith led the Wildcats in pass receiving this season with 50 receptions for 716 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught apair of two-point conversions. He was a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, which goes to the nation’s best tight end. Threeof his best games came against nationally ranked teams eight catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns in “The Swamp” at Florida;five for 108 yards against Georgia; and six for 102 yards vs. Mississippi State.
In addition to Football News, Smith has been named first-team All-SEC by The Sporting News, Collegiate Sports Southeastcable TV network and by the CollegeFootballNews.com Internet site.
20 Wildcats Named to SEC Academic Honor Roll: Twenty Kentucky Wildcats have studied their way onto theSoutheastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2000 season.
Alabama led the way with 22 players, followed by Mississippi with 21, and Kentucky and Vanderbilt with 20 each. To qualifyfor the SEC Academic Honor Roll, a player must have a 3.0 grade-point average for either the past year or their career and be asophomore or higher in academic classification.
Two Wildcats tight end Corry Doyle and kicker Seth Hanson made the honor roll for the third time. Nine Wildcats made itfor the second time, including wide receivers Mike Beirne, wide receiver Neal Brown, free safety Willie Gary, wide receiver AnthonyKelly, linebacker Morris Lane, offensive guard Josh Parrish, quarterback Mark Perry, defensive end Grayson Smith, and strongsafety Patrick Wiggins.
