LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Kentucky volleyball team closed out its’ 2000 season losing to archrival Louisville 3-0 Saturday night at Cardinal Arena. With the loss, Kentucky split its two matches in this weekend’s Conference USA Challenge, defeating Marquette University Friday evening.
The Cats completed their season with an overall record of 6-21. Despite the record, UK ended the season on a positive note by winning two of its final three matches.
UK took the opening two points of game one on a kill by Liz McCaslin followed by a service ace by Whitney Sample. However, that lead would be short-lived as U of L earned a sideout, then ran off seven consecutive points. The Cards continued stringing together points, eventually taking game one 15-5.
The Cats were blanked 15-0 in game two. U of L’s offensive attack was near flawless, recording 19 kills and only 2 errors for a .548 hitting percentage.
Game three resembled the two previous games as U of L took control from the first point to win 15-2.
U of L (26-7), which has won 19 of its last 20 matches, hit an astounding .463 for the match and was led by senior Kelly McCalin who posted a match-high 12 kills for the Cards.
UK will lose four seniors from this year’s squad: Melissa Kracht, Stephenie Taylor, Melissa Kracht and Megan Weiskircher. Taylor, Wallace and Weiskircher were four-year members of the UK volleyball team while Kracht joined the team prior to the 1999 season. In four year’s, the seniors have compiled a record of 52-67.
