The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team placed eight student-athletes on the Mid-American Conference Honor Roll, theleague announced on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
UK placed one more athlete than last year on this season’s list, with four repeats from 1999. Giovani Fernandes, Ilkka Jantti,Chris McAlpine, and Marc Theriault repeated the honor from last season, while Rob Mayer, Chris McDaniel, Jay Riney, and J.D.Stephenson made the list for the first time.
This is a great testament to the hard work these players put in off the field, Coach Ian Collins said. It validates our philosophythat athletes must also put in the work in the classroom.The Cats also have had 12 student-athletes selected to the 2000 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the fallsemesterand four individuals honored as the PNC Bank Student-Athlete of the Week. Fernandes, Jantti, McAlpine and McDanieleach were selected for the PNC award during the season.
To be eligible for the MAC Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, must be asophomore or higher in academic classification and not a first-year transfer, and must have lettered this season.
