University of Kentucky volleyball players April Barnhorst and Megan Weiskircher have been selected to the Verizon Academic All-District IV Second-Team for the 2000 season. Barnhorst, a junior middle blocker for the Cats, carries a 4.0 GPA in marketing. Weiskircher posts a 3.97 GPA in nutrition & food and plans to attend dental school following her graduation in May.
In addition to excelling in the classroom, both players are instrumental in UK’s attack on the court. Weiskircher leads UK with 354 kills and 234 digs while Barnhorst leads the team with 97 total blocks.
“The academic excellence that April and Megan have portrayed in the classroom is something that all student-athletes should take a step back and apply,” UK coach Jona Braden said. “They are exceptional students who work extremely hard in everything and anything that they do. I am proud of their efforts and for them to have the opportunity to be honored in this manner. More importantly, their example to all student-athletes across the country and on their own team is something that we take note of and are very proud of.”
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated for the awards, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
