Mike Major, University of Kentucky defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since 1997,has resigned his position effective at the end of the season. The following is a statement from CoachMajor:
Today, November 13, 2000, I am resigning my position as the defensive coordinator at theUniversity of Kentucky. In conference with Coach Mumme, I will continue to coach through thegame this Saturday at the University of Tennessee.
For the time being, I will remain on the staff as the Director of Football Operations as per theoffer of both Coach Mumme and Athletic Director Larry Ivy.
I want to publicly thank all of the young men who have played for me and I want to thank thefans who have supported me through some tough times. While I do not believe for a minute that Iwas the only problem, I am ultimately responsible for the results that have been produced by thedefense. Those results have not been what I wanted nor were they the results that the playerswanted or deserved.
I wish the best for the future of UK football and see this move as necessary to the eventual goalthat Coach Mumme and I arrived here with, and that is an SEC championship. I am totally committedto this end and truly appreciate the opportunity I was given.
