University of Kentucky men’s tennis players Edo Bawono and Gustav Pousette were each eliminated from the Region III Championships inAthens, Ga., on Friday, Nov. 3.
Pousette, a junior from Hallstahammar, Sweden, defeated third round opponent Jerome Le Belicard from Mississippi State, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4,before falling in the fourth round to Georgia’s Brandon Wagner, 6-3, 6-1. Bawono was eliminated in the third round by No. 1 seed Matias Boekerfrom Georgia in a hard-fought match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
The two Cats paired up for doubles action, notching a victory over Tennessee’s Paul Podbury and Wade Orr, who defaulted. The Kentucky duodefaulted their third round match to Boeker and Travis Parrott from Georgia, thus wrapping up competition at their final fall tournament.
“Our guys came out and fought hard today,” Associate Head Coach Ford Lankford said. “Edo had a great showing against Boeker, the No. 1seed, and Gustav looked impressive in his third round match as well.”
The Wildcats enjoy a two-month break in preparation for the spring season, which gets underway Jan. 18-21 at the SEC IndoorChampionships in Atlanta, Ga.
