University of Kentucky men’s tennis senior Edo Bawono lost in the semi-finals of the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday, Oct.29, ending a 12-match fall win streak.
Bawono made his way to Sunday’s semis after knocking out three opponents in Saturday’s competition. His quarterfinal matchup with ArizonaState’s No. 1 player, Nic Dubey exhausted the Jakarta, Indonesia native, as he took the match in three grueling sets, 6-7(2), 7-6(2), 6-0.
Sunday’s match pitted the UK captain against Mississippi State’s Rene Combette, and Bawono’s exhaustion showed through, as he was easilydefeated, 6-4, 6-2. The loss broke Bawono’s win streak, which dates back to the Charles Fluitt Collegiate Classic in September.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the strength and determination Edo has shown on the court this fall,” Coach Dennis Emery said. “I can’t remember ever having a player tally a win streak this long. It’s impressive and really motivating for both me and Edo.”
In doubles action the duo of Bawono and junior Gustav Pousette defaulted their semi-final matchup with Ricardo Rizzo and Stephen Taylor from San Diego due to Bawono’s extensive play on Saturday.
The Cats are back in action next weekend, Nov. 2-5, when they travel to Athens, Ga., to compete in the Regional Indoors.
