The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team played well in the final day of the South Florida Invitational, winning two singles and two doublesmatches against the squad from Wake Forest. Senior Edo Bawono continued his remarkable fall run, finishing the weekend 5-0 and improving hisfall singles record to 9-0.
Bawono, who took out USF’s Paco Anelo, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(4) in Saturday evening action, rolled over Wake Forest’s Justin Kaufman, 6-2, 6-4 onSunday. Senior Gustav Pousette defeated Mike Murray in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to go 2-3 on the weekend. Also notching victories today were thedoubles teams of Bawono and junior Reven Stephens, who took out Murray and David Lowenthal, 8-3, and Pousette and junior Johan Grunditz,who notched a win over Raul Munoz and Trent Brendon by a score of 8-3.
Stephens had a rough day in singles play, losing in the second flight to Munoz, 6-1, 6-1, while Gruditz retired in the second set of his match withLowenthal and took a loss by a score of 6-1, 1-0. Freshman Justin Kinney, who battled illness for much of the weekend, couldn’t find his rhythm inthe tiebreaker and fell to Brendon, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(4). Wrapping up play for the Cats in Sunday’s singles action was sophomore Elliott Datlow, whosuffered defeat at the hands of David Bere, 6-2, 6-0. The doubles team of Gruditz and Datlow was defeated by Wake’s Kaufman and AndrewSimpson, 8-2.
“I think we came away from this tournament with a lot of valuable experience,” Coach Dennis Emery said. “Edo played terrifically and I definitelycan see the team growing more with each match.”
The Cats return to action Oct. 26-29 when they wrap up their fall schedule at the Regional Indoor Championships in Athens, Ga.
