Cats take first place in every event
The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each recorded dual meet victories Friday over the University of Louisville in UK’s Lancaster Aquatic Center.
Both the Wildcat women’s and men’s teams started strong and never looked back in their season opener. The women posted a 130-86 win, while the men won by a score of 128-96.
Seniors Melissa Olson and Jaime Siegele paced the women’s team with three victories apiece. Olson and Siegele teamed with freshman Kelli Stein and junior Debra Hinsley to win the 400 medley relay. The pair of seniors were also on the winning 400 freestyle relay with freshman Shawna Sechrist and sophomore Tracy Sullivan. Olson also won the 200 backstroke, while Siegele took first place in the 500 freestyle. Junior Sarah Hoppe took first place honors in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Junior diver Aaron Kirkpatrick won the 1-meter diving event, defeating teammate Clayton Moss. The UK duo reversed finishes in the 3-meter dive however, with Moss placing first and Kirkpatrick taking second place.
On the women’s side, senior Carrie Knoeber recorded a first-place finish in the 3-meter event while placing second in the 1-meter dive.
Freshman Daniel Wimer led the UK men’s team. The Palatine, Ill. native claimed wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and captured another first-place finish by leading off the 400 medley relay.
“I feel real good about the match,” UK coach Gary Conelly said. “We had some real good times. I think the team is ahead of where they were at the start of last year. I’m real pleased with our freshmen.”
