Four University of Kentucky women’s tennis players will travel to Los Angeles this week to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NCAA All-American Championship (Oct. 14-22). The prestigious tournament features the nation’s top tennis players and is the second leg of the ITA Grand Slam.
Sophomores Leigh Bradwell and Sarah Witten are both entered in the pre-qualifying round of the singles tournament and will begin play on the campus of UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 14. They will compete in a round of 64 in an attempt to seize one of only eight spots into the qualifying round.
Senior Brooke Skeen and junior Carolina Mayorga have received automatic bids into the qualifying round based on their fall recordand past performances. Of the 64 participants in the qualifying round which will be played at the Riveria Country Club, only eight will reach the elite main draw of the Championship.
The Blue and White will also be represented in the doubles draw of the tournament. The nation’s 11th-ranked duo of Mayorga and Witten was one of 12 teams to receive a bid into the main draw and will compete on Thursday, Oct. 19.Fellow Wildcat doubles team of Skeen and Bradwell, the country’s 45th-ranked doubles pair, will compete inthe qualifying round on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
“This tournament has an extremely high level of competition,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “It is an outstanding opportunity for the team to play in such a competitive event.”
