LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) (Oct. 7, 2000) — South Carolina’s Derek Watson ran for 149 yards, including a 58-yard run for the game-winning score, as South Carolina edged Kentucky 20-17 on October 7.

With South Carolina down 17-13, Sheldon Brown intercepted Jared Lorenzen’s pass at the South Carolina 6 and returned it to the 42.

On the next play, Watson took a pitch right, cut back to the middle of the field and outran three defenders to the end zone to give the Gamecocks (5-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) a 20-17 lead with 1:38 to play in the third quarter.

Kentucky (2-4, 0-3) marched back to the South Carolina 19, but two false-start penalties and two plays for negative yardage forced a fourth-and-26 from the 35. Lorenzen’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete to end the Wildcats’ best scoring threat of the half.

The Wildcats took possession at their own 11 with 2:19 to play and again drove down the field, but Lorenzen’s pass fell short on fourth-and-21 from the South Carolina 41 with 22 seconds to play.

Lorenzen completed 34 of 52 passes for 304 yards, passed for a touchdown, rushed for a score and threw two interceptions. Freshman Chad Scott rushed 16 times for 85 yards and caught 10 passes for 85 yards for the Wildcats.

The victory was South Carolina’s first on the road since a 39-13 win over Arkansas in 1997, a span of 13 games. Kentucky lost its third straight for the first time since coach Hal Mumme took over the program in 1997.

Phil Petty completed 17 of 31 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown for the Gamecocks. Brian Scott caught eight passes for 157 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown reception.

Following Reid Bethea’s 40-yard field goal on South Carolina’s first possession, Lorenzen capped a 68-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge over center to put Kentucky up 7-3 with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Petty countered with a 44-yard TD pass to Scott down the left sideline to put the Gamecocks back on top 10-7.

The Wildcats reclaimed the lead when Lorenzen hit Neal Brown with a 2-yard scoring pass on a quick slant with 13:42 remaining in the half.

Seth Hanson’s 21-yard field goal gave Kentucky a 17-10 lead. Bethea’s 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half made it 17-13.
