The University of Kentucky junior varsity football team fell to Georgetown College for the second time thisseason, dropping 38-14 on Monday, Oct. 2 in Commonwealth Stadium.
The Cats (0-2) struggled early on both sides of the ball, allowing Georgetown to compile 612 yards of totaloffense compared to the Cats 253 yards. The Tigers (3-0) took an early 14-0 lead in the first half after NickAyers rushed for back-to-back touchdowns. The Cats’ defense regrouped to hold the Tigers in the red-zone,stopping Georgetown on UK’s four-yard line twice in the third quarter.
The Cats looked as if they might attempt a comeback in the final period after notching two quick touchdownsand recovering their third fumble of the night. UK fullback Noah Gibson (Ft. Thomas, Ky.) put the Cats on thescoreboard early in the fourth quarter with a two-yard run while UK quarterback Matt Casey (Shelbyville, Ky.)hit junior wide receiver Tom Malloy (Urbandale, Iowa) with a 39-yard pass for a score with nine minutesremaining. However, Georgetown’s Jonathan Taylor ended all hopes of a comeback with a 65-yard run for atouchdown followed by a one-yard score late in the fourth.
We had our chances to comeback, UK Coach Rob Manchester said. They are a good football team and wejust have to learn from our mistakes and improve in practice.
Despite being pressured most of the evening by the Tiger defense, UK’s freshman quarterback connectedwith 10 different receivers, throwing 30 of 54 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore tight endEdgar Gantt (West Hampton, N.J.) led the receiving corps with nine catches for 118 yards.
Probably the most impressive player in the game was kicker Stephen Scaldaferri (Centreville, Va.). The5-10 junior booted three kick-offs into the end zone, allowing the Tigers to only return one kick-off for 23 yards.
The Cats defensive unit was led by freshman Octavius Bond (Chicago, Ill.) with 10 tackles while juniorJermaine White (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Michael Clayborne (Lexington, Ky.) charted six tackles apiece.
The Cats fall to 0-2 on the season after dropping to the Tigers on Sept. 18, 42-13, in Georgetown, Ky.Kentucky will be back in action in Commonwealth Stadium on Monday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. versus Saint FrancisCollege.
