The University of Kentucky womens tennis team finished strong on the final day of theLady Gamecock Fall Tennis Classic in Columbia, S.C. The Cats had several singles competitorsfinish near the top of each flight.
In the “A-1” flight, senior Brooke Skeen defeated South Carolinas Jennifer Radman toclaim 3rd place. Skeen battled back after losing the first set to win 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.UK junior Lauren Rookledge also participated in the “A-1” flight. Rookledgerolled Katie McLaughlin of Louisville to be the flights 5th place finisher.
Sophomore Sarah Witten took 3rd place in the “A-2” flight by knocking offVinny Sciverling of College of Charleston in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Jill Buckley and Shannon Stafford both placed in the “B-1” flight for theWildcats. Buckley took 3rd place with her 6-4, 6-3 win over South CarolinasTamara Sutton, while Stafford notched 5th place when she defeated RenataCamargo of College of Charleston 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Tennis Cat Leigh Bradwell was defeated in her bid to win the”B-2″ flight title when she was downed by Lynn-Yin Tan of South Carolina in awell-played match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Also in the “B-2” flight, Amy Trefethendefeated South Carolinas Catherine Brown 7-6, 6-2 to take 5th place for theCats.
The UK tennis team will be back in action on Oct. 6-8, when it travel toKnoxville, Tenn., to take part in the St. Marys Health Care Tournament.
