The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team served out some impressive performances on Friday,Sept. 29, at the Lady Gamecock Fall Tennis Classic. Four Cats advanced in their singles flight and all four ofUKs doubles teams moved on as the Tennis Cats continue to roll through the fall season.
Wildcat senior and the nation’s 84th-ranked player Brooke Skeen rolled Katie McLaughlin ofLouisville in the first round of the “A-1” singles flight 6-2, 6-4. In the “A-2” singles flight,sophomore Sarah Witten pulled out a hard fought win for the Cats against Wake ForestsAimee Smith 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Jill Buckley dominated her “B-1” singles flight match as she knocked offPaige Eber of Louisville 6-1, 6-0. Fellow sophomore Leigh Bradwell also chalked up a winfor UK in the “B-2” singles flight with her impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory over LouisvillesMarianna Torres, 6-2, 6-1.
The Wildcats’ strong doubles play from last season has carried over into the 2000-01season as all four of the Cats doubles pairs advanced in their respective flights.
Eleventh-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Witten advanced into the next round with an 8-4victory, while 45th-ranked Skeen and Bradwell also advanced in the doubles “A” flight withtheir 8-3 win. In the “B” doubles flight Lauren Rookledge and Buckley advanced by blankingtheir competition 8-0, while Amy Trefethen and Shannon Stafford teamed up to reach thesecond round with an 8-2 win.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when the Lady Gamecock Classicresumes.
