University of Kentucky men’s tennis freshman Justin Kinney won Flight B of the 2000 Ball State Invitational on Sunday,September 23, defeating Louisville’s Cody Conley 6-3, 7-6 in the finals. Conley, who played the No. 5 spot for Louisville lastseason, made his way to the finals after beating semi-final opponent Ciaran Foley. In the semi-finals, Kinney met Brent Stevens of Illinois State and struggled in the first set, falling 1-6, before coming back towin the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Johan Grunditz made his way to the Flight A finals before falling to Ball State’s Andrew Seni 6-7, 6-7. Seni playedat the No. 1 position last season for the Cardinals, which led to an exciting matchup. Grunditz first handily defeated Butler’sBrandon Currie in the semi-final 6-3, 6-4.
The Cats are back in action on Friday, September 29 when they play host to Notre Dame in the Charles FluittCollegiate Classic at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The tournament kicks off Friday morning and action wraps up onSunday evening.
