(Sept. 22, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s tennis doubles team of junior Carolina Mayorga and sophomore Sarah Witten advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket in the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships on September 22.
Mayorga and Witten, the nation’s 11th-ranked doubles pair, defeated April Gabler and Linde Mues of Wisconsin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to make their way to the semi-finals. The Wildcat tandem will face a tough task on Saturday when they take on 29th-ranked Marlene Mejia and Erin Neibling of North Carolina. Mayorga and Witten defeated Mejia and Neibling in their last meeting on February 12, 2000, in Lexington.
Senior Brooke Skeen and sophomore Leigh Bradwell were also in action on Friday. The 45th-ranked duo fell to 40th-ranked Julie DeRoo and Mira Radu of Ole Miss. Skeen and Bradwell took the first set in impressive style before falling 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Mayorga also saw action in the singles consolation bracket of the tournament. The 96th-ranked Mayorga fell to 33rd-ranked Kristi Dascoli of Ohio State 6-4, 6-4.
