Weiskircher continues dominance with 15 kills
(Sept. 15, 2000) — The Southern Illinois Salukis quickly disposed of tournament host Kentucky, 3-0, in the nightcap of the Kentucky Conference Challenge Volleyball Tournament on September 15 at Memorial Coliseum. Middle blocker Megan Weiskircher (Houston, Texas) was the lone bright spot for UKs offense that hit at a .136 percentage for the match.
Weiskircher reached double-figures for the sixth consecutive match with a match-high tying 15 kills, while posting a superb .345 hitting percentage. Kristie Kemner equaled Weiskirchers offensive effort with 15 kills for the Salukis.
With the score tied at five in game one, the Salukis (7-2) won the next five points and cruised to victory 15-11. The net play for SIU wreaked havoc for the UK offense as six blocks by the Salukis helped cause 12 Wildcat hitting errors. The Cats hit -.079 in game one.
SIU continued attacking UK (2-5) in the second game and handed the Cats their worst defeat of the season, 15-4. The Salukis offense was near flawless in the game, hitting at a remarkable .417 clip. Kentucky responded better in game three as the Cats came back from down 8-11 to tie the score at 11, only to fall short once again, 15-13.
In Fridays tournament-opening match, James Madison defeated Austin Peay, 3-1. The JMU Lady Dukes (5-3) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game one en route to a 15-6 win. Austin Peay (4-5) battled back to even the match with a 15-13 victory in game two. However, that would be the only game the Lady Govs would win as JMU rebounded to take games three and four, 15-11 and 17-15, holding off a valiant comeback effort by the Lady Govs in the final game.
The KCC continues Saturday morning as SIU and JMU start things off with a match at 10 a.m. UK will attempt to get back on the winning track as they face Austin Peay in a match scheduled to start at noon. APSU has lost its last four matches.
Play will continue into the evening as Austin Peay takes on Southern Illinois at 5 p.m. In the tournament finale, UK will take on JMU at approximately 7 p.m.
