(Sept. 14, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team heads to Baltimore, Md., Saturday, September 16, to begin their fall season at the National Clay Court Championships. Several of the players will be taking with them a national ranking that was announced earlier in the week.
UK enters the Clay Court Championships with six players vying for the singles crown. Sophomores Shannon Stafford and Amy Trefethen will begin play on Saturday in the pre-qualifying round of the tournament. Senior Brooke Skeen, the nation’s 84th-ranked player, junior Carolina Mayorga, 96th-ranked in the country, and sophomores Sarah Witten and Leigh Bradwell all received byes into the qualifying rounds based on rankings and last season’s performances. The players receiving byes will begin individual match play on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The Wildcats also send both highly-ranked doubles teams into the draw at the Clay Court Championship. Both 11th-ranked Mayorga and Witten and 45th-ranked Skeen and Bradwell received byes into the qualifying round.
