The University of Kentucky womens soccer team defeated Utah State 2-1 Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex. Kentucky (4-1, 1-0 SEC) now leads the series 1-0.
It was a victory, but it was not a convincing victory, UK coach Warren Lipka said. We need to bring consistency into our game.
The first half almost scoreless, Utah State (0-3) took control of the board in the 42nd minute. Sara Buie shot to an open net off an Amber Tracy assist when UK goalkeeper Beth Wells was down. Kentucky was unable to answer in the first half, but rallied late in the second half to win the game. Kate Qually broke away from the Aggie defenders early in the second half, but came up short when Utah State goalkeeper Michala Hawes reached to save the ball.
Elizabeth Ramsey found the net to tie the game in the 82nd minute. The shot was a rebound from a shot off the right post and Ramsey put it into the top left corner of the net. Though overtime loomed, Jen Reese ended the Aggies hopes of an eventual win by scoring the game-winner in the 85th minute. Annie Gage and Keri Boyce assisted, passing the ball across the middle and Reese put it into the corner of the net.
The UK goals were the second of the season for both Ramsey and Reese, while the assists marked Gages third and Boyces fourth. The Wildcats out-shot the Aggies 14-2, with all the Aggie shots coming in the first half. Wells was able to find one save on the night, as Hawes notched four.
The Cats will travel to face Ohio on Sunday, Sept. at 1:00 p.m. at the Shafer Street Field in Athens, Ohio.
