The University of Kentucky mens soccer team dropped its home opener in overtime to Vanderbilt 1-0on Friday, Sept. 8.
The Cats dominated play from the start outshooting the Commodores 10-1 in the first half. They wereable to contain the ball in their half of the field most of the night, but could manage no goals. UK missed onseveral opportunities, with the ball going just wide or hitting the bar.
The second stanza was a repeat of the first with Kentucky again holding the advantage in shots, 8-1. TheCats again had a number of chances at the Vandy goal including six corner kicks. The best chance they had atscoring came in the 55th minute when a Commodore was called for a handball in the box resulting in a penaltykick. Brent Rainey took the shot but missed just left, indicative of how the entire night went.
The game entered the first overtime tied at zero, and although the Dores could get nothing going duringregulation, they attacked quickly in the extra period. At 94:39 Charlie White took the ball off a Philip Stackfree kick and lobbed it over UK keeper Brian OLeary for the gamewinner.
“This is a very, very disappointing loss,” head coach Ian Collins said. “We created a lot of opportunities, but hit the crossbar three times and missed on a penalty kick. Im not disappointed in the effort orperformance, just the result. This one will definitely hurt.”
The Cats have little time to dwell on the defeat as they return to the UK Soccer Complex to face the UCSanta Barbara Gauchos on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 12:30 p.m.
