The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team takes the field for its home opener when it facesVanderbilt on Friday, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.

The Cats (2-0-0) return home after a two-game road trip that began the season. UK defeatedLouisville 2-1 for the programs 100th victory, then traveled to Asheville, N.C., where it defeated theUNC Asheville Bulldogs, 3-0.

UK is led by three players who have accumulated three points each in the early going: freshmenBrook Pearse and Chris Soler and sophomore J.D. Stephenson. Pearse scored the tying goal justbefore halftime against Louisville and assisted on the game-winner at UNCA, while Stephenson nettedthe game-winner against U of L.

The Commodores (0-2-0) enter this contest riding a two-game losing streak. Vandy fell 9-0 toNo. 9 St. Louis and 3-0 to Louisville. They are led by Charlie White, Jimmy Stone and Chris Yingling.

“Every time we play Vandy, its a tough game,” head coach Ian Collins said. “Even though men’ssoccer doesn’t compete in the Southeastern Conference, we are SEC teams, so it is a big rivalry. Theyhave gotten off to a rough start, but their coaches will have them ready to play.”

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series with UK, 4-5-0. However, the Cats have triumphed in the last twocontests, 4-1 in 1998 and 3-1 in 1999.

The match is the second of a double-header that gets underway when the UK women’s soccerteam faces Utah State at 5:30 p.m.
