(Aug. 27, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team defeated Vanderbilt 3-2 in two overtimes on August 27 at the UK Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (2-0, 1-0) scored first off an Annie Gage free kick that blasted to the left, just out of Vanderbilt goalkeeper Stacee Sproul’s reach, in the 12th minute. Freshman Danielle Slupski shot a would-be goal off an Elizabeth Ramsey and Keri Boyce double assist, before the goal was called off due to an offsides call against the Wildcats. Boyce scored the two other goals in the game, including the game winner, 19 seconds into the second sudden death overtime. For her first goal, she took the goalkeeper one-on-one after a Ramsey pass and shot the ball to the top of the net putting Kentucky up 2-1 in the 64th minute. After the first overtime yielded no goals, the game moved into the second overtime. The game-winning goal came as a result of an Annie Gage assist. Boyce took on the goalkeeper, firing the ball past her to end the game.
“We gave away two goals in the match and we need to improve defensively,” coach Warren Lipka said afterwards. “We missed a few opportunities to score but on the whole we got away with a win that could have gone either way.”
Katie Stegall scored the Commodores’ first goal off a three yard cross in the 23rd minute to tie the game at one all. Michelle Bruntlett went one-on-one with Kentucky goalkeeper Beth Wells, beating her, in the 65th minute to tie the Cats at two all.
Kentucky outshot Vanderbilt 14-4, while both teams had eight corner kicks. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 10-5. The Cats won, 5-2, when the teams met last year.
The Wildcats’ next game is Friday, Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. EST against Minnesota, as the Wildcats participate in the University of Minnesota tournament.
