(Aug. 23, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s tennis program has announced the hiring of Kathy Herring as its new assistant coach.

Herring is a former UK Tennis Cat who played three successful years in the Bluegrass after transferring from Indiana University.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee native remained with the team for the 1998-99 season as a graduate assistant, receiving her undergraduate degree in 1999. After leaving UK in May 1999, she became a teaching professional at the Four Seasons Sports Country Club in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Coach Mark Guilbeau is excited to see Herring come back to UK and feels that she can bring the same relentless work ethic to this team that she showed as a player.

“I can tell you that I have rarely seen a player give the consistent effort match after match that Kathy did,” Guilbeau said. “She was intensely determined on the court. Kathy expected a great deal from herself as a player and has shown the same intensity as a coach. She is going to be a very positive influence.”

The women’s tennis team is currently preparing for the fall season which will begin on September 16-17 with the Pre-Qualifying round of the National Clay Court.
