The University of Kentucky women’sswimming team once again got strongperformances from Melissa Olson andRachel Komisarz to win the Nike CupInvitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., onSaturday.
Olson continued her streak of victories,winning the 200 backstroke with a time of2:00.86. She also finished second in the 200breaststroke with a time of 2:18.71.
Komisarz also added another victory to herlist of credits, taking first place in the 200butterfly with a time of 2:00.77. The UK women earned 993 points duringthe three-day meet, easily outdistancing runner-up North Carolina (874).
The UK men posted a team score of 454.5 points over the weekend towrap up competition in third place behind winners Texas A&M (649) andrunners-up North Carolina (630). Nat Lewis led the Wildcats on Saturday,winning the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:11.45.
The men’s 400 freestyle relay team of Jarrod Rush, Shaun Zitani, MaconWhite and Aaron Workman also turned in a strong performance, placingfourth with a time of 3:04.22.
In addition to Olson’s win in the 200 backstroke, the UK women placed twoother swimmers in the top four in the event. Janie Reed was second with amark of 2:01.89, while Taryn Kannegeisser was fourth with a time of2:04.18.
All-American Leigh Dalton posted a second-place finish in the 1,650freestyle, coming in with a time of 16:41.38, while Annabel Kosten wassecond in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.87. Ellen Strange helped theWildcats complete a 1-2 sweep in the 200 butterfly, finishing second behindKomisarz with a time of 2:01.11. Emily Grass turned in a third-placeperformance in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:19.61. In addition, the400 freestyle relay team was second in 3:25.04.
The Kentucky swimming teams take next week off, before the women returnto action on Dec. 6th as they travel to Arkansas.
