Women’s 4×100-relay team takes second.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 18, 1999) — Matt Kavanagh provisionally qualified in the hammerthrow for the NCAA Championships in Boise, Idaho on June 2-5. His tossof 213 feet, 8 inches placed him third in the competition.

In the women’s competition, the 4×100-relay team of Lutisha Shittu, MichelleWilliams, Valerie Williams and Shevan Threats placed second in the race.

Shittu and Threats were top finishers in several other events as well. Shittuset a new personal best and finished fifth with a time of 13.74 in the100-meter hurdles. Threats finished third in the triple jump with a leap of41-03.00.

In the shot put competition, Heidi Quast and Suzie von Bernuth finishedsecond and third place, respectively, with throws of 45-08.50 and44-06.00. von Bernuth also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of151-11.00. Beth Burkett finished in fourth in the javelin throw. She threw theapparatus 133-02.00.

Other top finishers in men’s competition include Scott Theis, who placedsecond in the shot put competition with a throw of 55-2.75, and Jeff Ellis,who finished in third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.19.
